Head‑Royce honors faculty excellence through 3-year endowed chairs and annual donor-funded awards celebrating outstanding educators.
Every year, Head‑Royce honors members of its professional community whose work goes beyond the expected — educators and staff who inspire students, build community, and bring something irreplaceable to this school. These endowed chairs and awards are made possible by donors who believed that recognizing excellence was itself a form of investment.
Endowed Chairs are among the highest honors Head‑Royce bestows on its faculty. Each chair is appointed for three school years and includes an annual salary stipend and professional development grant.
These one-time awards are presented at the end of each school year in recognition of an exemplary year of service
Established in 1983, this fellowship honors individuals who have served the school with excellence and exceptional spirit and have especially enhanced the lives of others.
- Roz Fleury – 2026, Associate Director of Operations
Established in 1984 by Candace and Dick Burge in honor of Dick's mother, who believed strongly that learning is supported not only by a student's family but by individuals at school who consistently inspire students and demonstrate excellence themselves.
- Christy Betts – 2026, 2nd Grade Homeroom Teacher
Established in memory of one of Head-Royce's greatest fans, whose family had deep roots at the school — four children attended, and her husband Bill served on the Board of Trustees for many years. This award recognizes the spirit that Chris embodied and that makes Head-Royce what it is.
- Gretchen Wu '03 – 2026, Middle and Upper School Latin Teacher
Established in 2020 — an extraordinary year of reckoning — by a group of parents inspired by a 4th grade teacher who met that moment with excellence, heart, and courage. Named for the Swahili word for "unity," this award recognizes an individual who has made significant, concrete contributions to equity and community at Head-Royce and beyond.
- Ciara Coleman – 2026, 5th Grade Homeroom Teacher
Established in 2001, the Schneider Family Faculty Award is presented annually to a faculty member whose exceptional work and commitment to excellence in teaching have made a meaningful impact on the Head-Royce community.
Jacob Leland – 2026, Upper School English Teacher
The Jayhawk Spirit Award honors a member of the professional community who brings joy, commitment, and spirit to their work every day.
Nat Tieng – 2026 Upper School Division Coordinator
The Josiah Royce Award goes to a faculty member who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the curriculum through the meaningful enhancement of an existing program or the creation of something entirely new to meet an emerging need. The award recognizes work that is exceptional in both its impact and scope, extending well beyond the ordinary expectations of the role.
Chris Kinney – 2026 Upper Math and Computer Science Teacher
The Students First Award honors a member of the professional community who has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to building community in ways that reflect our mission, vision, and values—most notably, our commitment to putting students first.
