A Message from the Head & Board Chair

As we approach the holiday season it’s a natural time to look back and reflect. To remember the highlights of the past year, to feel gratitude for special milestones, and to thank all the people who came together to support each other within our School community. The 2018-19 school year was one for the record books: Head-Royce remains strong and stable, yet innovative and forward-looking. 

Most of our School communications focus on the pillars of our mission: Scholarship, Diversity and Citizenship. We are thrilled to share regular updates on the excellent teaching and learning at Head-Royce, our students’ deep civic engagement with the Oakland/East Bay community and beyond, and our commitment to deepening our student’s sense of belonging in every sense. But each year this publication - our Annual Report - looks “under the hood” of Head-Royce. In our role as fiduciaries of the school, much of the work of the Board of Trustees occurs behind the scenes. A top priority is making sure our budget is balanced, our faculty and staff are paid competitively and have the resources to continually hone their craft. We work tirelessly to ensure that precious tuition dollars are carefully spent, and to provide the financial aid needed to give all talented students access to Head-Royce, regardless of socioeconomic background. 

The primary source of non-tuition revenue is philanthropy. It is because of the generosity of our extended Head-Royce community that we are able to truly thrive as a school. In the 2018-2019 school year, our community sustained a transformative level of giving, contributing nearly $2 million in support of Head-Royce. Thank you for your investment in our teachers, our students and the future leaders that will go on to change the world.
