Air Quality

Current PurpleAir Reading:

Head-Royce refers to PurpleAir readings for the most accurate real-time data, as there is a PurpleAir sensor installed on campus. (Please allow up to 10 seconds for the widget to load the most current data.)

Please use the chart below to determine the School's response to the Air Quality Index:

A Note about AQI and School Closure, and our Standard Protocol
It is always the School's goal to remain open to support regular student and family routines, unless it becomes unsafe or unhealthy to do so. If the AQI is projected to reach 200 or more, the School will evaluate and communicate a plan in response, which may include closing the campus for one or more days. Should you decide to keep your child(ren) home because of sensitivity to the air quality, the faculty will extend its full support.
Please be in touch with your Division Head should you have any questions or concerns:
Lea Van Ness (LS) | Danny Scuderi (MS) | Ricky Lapidus (US)

For ASP-related questions, please call (510) 531-1300 x2301 or email Michael Elias.

Air Quality Athletics Policy
Head-Royce Athletics adheres to North Coast Section league bylaws which determine whether games and practices are canceled during times of compromised air quality. As a rule, an Air Quality Index of less than 151 must be registered for all high school outdoor athletic events hosted by NCS member schools during preseason, league and section championship events. In keeping with NCS guidelines, our air quality policy for outdoor athletics is as follows:
  • Practices and games will continue at all times with an AQI in the 0-100 range.
  • Practices and games may be modified if AQI is over 100.
  • Practice and games will be canceled if AQI is 150 or higher.
Indoor practices and games may be modified or canceled if AQI is 200 or greater.
For additional Athletics questions, please contact your team coach or Athletic Director Brendan Blakeley.
