Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of Head-Royce School, comprised of current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and community members who bring strategic expertise from a variety of professions.

The Board of Trustees governs the school in the following capacities:

Fiduciaries: Trustees serve as stewards of the School’s resources, including people, facilities, and financial assets.

Strategists: The Board sets the long-range, strategic direction of the School, side-by-side with the Head of School, in addition to supporting and evaluating the Head of School.

Ambassadors: Trustees embody and convey the school’s mission and core values.

Trustees serve on various working committees and task forces that focus on strategic initiatives for the long-term health of the School, including executive, finance, investment, audit, DEI, strategic plan, facilities and community relations, south campus construction, development, Heads Up, and governance.

Trustee Nomination Process

The Board of Trustees, through its Governance Committee, leads an ongoing process to identify and recommend prospective trustees whose leadership experience, judgment, perspectives, and commitment to Head-Royce will strengthen the Board’s ability to steward Head-Royce’s mission, strategic direction, and long-term institutional health.

Annually, the Board seeks candidates with a proven track record of being committed to Head-Royce’s mission to develop students of character, intellect, and creativity, as well as the values of Students First, Academic Excellence, Diversity, Belonging, and Civic Engagement. Nominations may be submitted through the online nomination form, whether by self-nomination, by a current trustee, or by a member of the Head-Royce community. All nominations are reviewed through the same Governance Committee process.

Each year, the Governance Committee also identifies particular areas of focus based on anticipated vacancies, committee succession, current board composition, and the school’s strategic priorities. Therefore, trustee recruiting is often a multi-year process.

As part of its consideration process, the Board values candidates’ participation on Board committees open to non-trustees (i.e., Development, Facilities, and Investment ) as well as Board-designated task forces and other initiatives, as determined appropriate by the Board Chair, Executive, and/or Governance Committees. Prospective nominees may include, but are not limited to, community leaders, educators, executives, current and past Head-Royce parents, and alumni. Submitting a trustee nomination does not guarantee moving forward in the trustee recruitment process in a given year.
