Few stages of life are as full of possibilities and contradictions as middle school. It is a distinctive period of rapid growth and development — intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally.
Middle schoolers are eager to explore new ideas and experiences, yet they hang on to the comfortable and familiar. They long for independence, but they still need structure and guidance. They want to develop new relationships and social connections, but they often feel more self-conscious than ever before. They are also beginning to discover their interests, passions, and strengths.
Teachers at Head‑Royce understand the unique opportunities and challenges of these years and create an environment where students will thrive, build self-confidence, and develop a stronger sense of self.
The academic program is rigorous and sequential, building the analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills students will need in Upper School and beyond. Students explore literature, history, math, science, world languages, and the art. Outdoor education trips take students into the field; community engagement days connect them to Oakland and the work of the Center for Community Engagement (CCE); student government and clubs give them room to discover what they love.
Class sizes are small, advisory relationships are close, and support is always nearby — ensuring every student has what they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
