Transformative learning starts when students see themselves reflected in the people around them…their teachers, their peers, their curriculum.
At Head‑Royce, we believe that belonging isn't a nice-to-have. It's the foundation that makes everything else possible. When students feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued, they take risks, ask harder questions, and become more fully themselves.
We work to build that experience deliberately and at every level: in our classrooms, in how we hire and support faculty, in our admissions process, and in the systems and structures that shape daily life at school. We call this work Equity and Community, because for us, the two are inseparable. A school where every student thrives isn't built on good intentions. It's built on relationships, accountability, and a community that actively takes care of its own.
Equity and community can be seen in the everyday life of the school. It shapes classroom conversations, the stories and perspectives students encounter, the support available to them, and the ways people learn with and from one another. Across the K–12 experience, students are encouraged to listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and approach difference with curiosity and respect.
This work also creates space for students to understand their own identities and experiences. Through relationships with teachers, advisors, counselors, classmates, and older or younger peers, students develop the confidence to contribute fully while helping others feel that they belong.
Building an equitable community is an ongoing responsibility shared by students, families, faculty, staff, and school leaders. It requires reflection, honest conversation, and a willingness to keep learning
Head‑Royce continues to examine its programs, practices, and policies so that the experience of belonging is felt throughout the school community.

The Equity and Community Team works across divisions and departments to support students, guide faculty and staff, strengthen community relationships, and help turn the school’s commitments into daily practice.
