A new practice field for Jayhawk Athletics!

On Nov. 1, the Head-Royce community will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the new athletic practice field leased from Ability Now Bay Area. Located across the street, the new field will offer much-needed practice space for our cross country, soccer, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee teams.

Field restoration completed over the past several months has included the planting of new sod, and installation of fencing and safety netting. The field also has a new irrigation system, which should keep the field in optimal condition throughout the school year.

Athletic Director Brendan Blakeley is looking forward to how the new field will simplify practice logistics: "What we gain from the new space is the ability to have almost all of our practices on campus or across the street, and will significantly reduce the number of times we need to find a field for practices."

The School will have to comply with a series of conditions outlined by the City of Oakland and the lease agreement, including daylight use during the school year only. The field is also closed for public use, and pets aren't permitted on the field at any time.

The new long-term lease is a win-win for both HRS and Ability Now Bay Area. ABNA Executive Director, Leslie Werosh Visbal, shares, "For anyone that has been to the center over the past several years, this field often housed four feet in height of dead grass and numerous gopher holes making it essentially unusable for anyone, but especially for a person using a wheelchair. Through our partnership with Head-Royce School, the field has been transformed into a sports field for students to use for practices and the updates to the field now allow use for our participants during the day. The new sod and irrigation system is a vast improvement along with new fencing along Lincoln Avenue and a new electric front gate installed just a few weeks ago. We could not be more pleased with the outcome."
