HEAD-ROYCE SCHOOL
APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR EMPLOYMENT

General Information
Head-Royce School welcomes applications from local, regional, national and international candidates. The School is an independent, non-denominational, K-12 school enrolling 750 students. The School seeks to inspire in students a life-long love of learning and desire for academic excellence, to promote an understanding of and respect for the diversity that makes our society strong, and to encourage constructive and responsible citizenship. The faculty at Head-Royce demonstrate the ability to promote self-esteem and growth in students, to establish a positive classroom experience that encourages maximum success for learners, and to maintain relationships within the School community that exemplify responsible and professional conduct. The School seeks diversity among its faculty and administration, as it does among its student body. The Head-Royce School is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in its hiring of employees on the basis of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, marital status, race, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic status.

Head-Royce School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the California Association of Independent Schools. State certification is not required for employment. To attract a wide range of qualified applicants, the School works with a number of placement agencies around the country.

Initial inquiry and application
Written inquiries are welcome throughout the year, the most effective time coming between January 15 and May 15 for the following school year. It is during these times that openings become known, and when the School is in its most active recruitment and hiring stage. Inquiries should be addressed to Paul D. Chapman, Head of School, Head-Royce School, 4315 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, CA, 94602. A letter, preferably with a resume, is sufficient as an initial inquiry. Email inquiries should be directed to jobs@headroyce.org.

An application for employment can be obtained by writing or calling the School, and is required for employment, as are official college transcripts. All information on the application may be subject to verification. Letters of verification, transcripts, and other formal documentation are accepted but not necessary at this early stage. These will be requested by the School as needed. If you are interested in being on the substitute list, please note that on the application or in a cover letter.

School Review of Inquiries and Applications
Head-Royce receives a relatively large number of solicited and unsolicited inquiries, and we attempt to respond by mail within two to three weeks. Since some positions require more extensive review, this time may be extended. If a prolonged period of time goes by without communication from the School, do not hesitate to write or call the Head of School's Office for more information about the status of your application.

You will receive notice in one of a number of categories: no openings in your area; credentials do not fit the exact needs of the position; application will be held for further review; position has been filled; or a request for an interview.

Applications will be considered for a one-year period preceding the school year for which the position is open.

The Interview
The School attempts to interview the most qualified individuals given the precise needs of a particular position. Numerous factors enter into a decision to grant interviews, including candidate qualifications, school needs, and time available.

Local candidates may be asked to return after a preliminary interview to speak with other members of the administration and/or faculty. Candidates from outside the local area typically spend a day at the school interviewing. Head-Royce attempts to have final candidates for a position meet with members of the School community most directly involved with the position and often asks finalists to teach a class.

After the Interview
The School tries to apprise candidates of their status after the interview. Because of the complexity of the interview process, however, time may vary from a prompt response to a prolonged period. Factors that may influence our decision include qualifications, experience, recommendations, college transcripts, and the evaluation of those involved in the interviewing process. Often one position entails several responsibilities which the candidates must fulfill.

The Head of the School makes all final decisions about employment and salary offers at the School. The successful candidate receives a written contract.

Salaries and Benefits
Head-Royce School's salaries and benefits are nationally competitive. A salary for a given position is set within the School's salary range. Salaries are determined based on years of experience and educational qualifications. The benefits package includes group medical and dental insurance, a pension program through TIAA/CREF and a professional development fund including workshops and summer grants for senior faculty.

Thank you for your interest in Head-Royce School.
