True diversity, phenomenal food, world-class craft breweries, gorgeous geography, a persistent sun, an innovator's DNA, world-class education, start-ups, multilingualism, bay views, mountains, trail running, multiethnic communities, the Fox and the Paramount... all of this adds up to our city of Oakland.
Oakland. I love my new town.
Anyone who has been willing to listen has heard me say since my family moved to Oakland 21 months ago, "I love Oakland." I have become extremely proud of my new hometown. I'm proud of the fact that Head-Royce is a nationally recognized educational exemplar in the city of Oakland.
I've been dismayed at how the national, regional and local media have done such a poor job at describing just what makes Oakland a special place. I've even heard it said by people who love Oakland that they like it this way. Some folks want us to remain as an unknown gem. While I respect that opinion, I think that's a flawed perspective. We do have issues with our infrastructure, business, education, and other crime. Improving these key civic issues can only happen with healthy, balanced planning, an influx of talented people ideas, businesses, young families, creativity and innovation.
One of the magazines that I read on a regular basis is Fast Company. I was absolutely thrilled to read
this article today, which espouses the beauty, the wonders, and the magic of the town that I now call home. Enjoy.
