The Head's Perspective

 Scholarship - Diversity - Citizenship

A weekly blog from the Head of School, Rob Lake, on emerging trends, academic research, important educational topics and daily musings.

The Magic of the Cockroach Beat Box: A Master Class in 6 Minutes

Great teaching requires a trans-disciplinary skill set.

This six minute TED-Ed Talk is masterful. The teacher, geeked out in his Adidas sweater and cockroach t-shirt, mesmerizes his audience using a subtle and sophisticated palate of pedagogies. In six minutes, he successfully employs six different techniques which, when combined, resulted in a coherent, inspiring learning moment. In six minutes, he sparked the interest of his middle school students in three typically disparate academic disciplines. In six minutes, he accomplished the one single most important element of a master class.

6 Techniques:

  1. Exploration of serious content
  2. Use of humor
  3. Multi-modal delivery
  4. Use of technology
  5. Multiple intelligences
  6. A repeatable, recordable, accessible lesson

3 Disparate Academic Disciplines:

  1. Neuroscience/Biology
  2. Music
  3. Art and Visualization

1 Single most important element to a Master Class:

  1. The students left inspired and asking more questions.

Enjoy.

Rob, this is very cool, thanks for posting. I'd add one more thing: It's also simply stylish. Excellent *taste* in the art and visuals -- a quality missing from many if not most computer presentations-- adds to the enjoyment, and to the impact.

Really enjoyed this TedEd. I appreciated you outlining what to look for in a Master Class. That was very helpful, and I learned even more about the presentation because of it. I agree with Mr. Mitchell, the visuals were outstanding and of course, the sound brought the presentation to life.

Thank you so much for sharing.
