HRS Summer Trips
Upper School's Upcoming Trips (2012-2013):
-Peru- The February trip to Peru, led by Luz Diaz, includes daily language and culture classes, and participation in community service projects in Cuzco. In and around Cuzco, the center of the Inca Empire, students will tour the Sacred Valley of the Incas and visit the town of Ollantaytambo, where they will find the best surviving example of Incan town planning. Their visit will coincide with Pisac, a bi-weekly craft fair held in the Main Square, where a variety of souvenirs can be purchased and bargained for. The students will also visit Machu Picchu, voted as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, built in one of the most remote and inaccessible of locations.
-Nepal- The summer trip to Nepal, led by Anna-Marie Nilsson, is now in its fourth year. The students will experience the Nepali culture and work daily with children aged 5-22 who reside in the Amaghar Children’s Home in Kathmandu. Activities include playing games, helping with homework, organizing a talent show and scavenger hunt, conducting craft projects and teaching athletics. Our students will also take a two-day trip to the Chitwan National Park, which will include a canoe ride down a jungle river, elephant riding and bathing and searching for rhinos.
-Cambodia- The summer trip to Cambodia, led by Saya McKenna, will partner our students with students and teachers from five other independent schools. The itinerary provides students with a very diverse and varied in-country experience. Students will learn about Cambodia’s rich ancient history by visiting national monuments like Ankor Wat. They will also be exposed to Cambodia's tragic recent history by visiting the Killing Fields and Tul Sleng Prison. Students will witness the tremendous economic growth Cambodia has experienced, and the sober parts of the trip will be balanced by the hopeful and uplifting, including NGOs like A New Day Cambodia, A New Hope for Cambodian Children, Kien Khleang Rehabilitation Center, Tiny Toones, and Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (PSE) along with boat tours and cooking classes.
