Head-Royce After School Program
510-531-1300  x2301 • Director: Mikki Frazier • mfrazier@headroyce.org

The After-School program provides after-school and out of school time care and enrichment classes for Head-Royce students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The program aims to provide quality learning experiences for Head Royce students during the after school hours. Also included in the After-School Program is the 3rd-6th grade ASP Band and Private Music Lessons for 2nd-12th graders. The program is facilitated by administrators, teachers and counselors who seek to enrich the lives of our students through facilitated play, enrichment opportunities and social experiences in a warm, safe environment. In this brochure you will find information about the many programs offered by the After-School Program including class descriptions, band and lesson information and registration procedures. All information about the program can also be found online.

Morning Care:

The ASP program provides care for students prior to school’s start beginning at 7:30 am at no cost. Although pre-registration is not required, we do ask that parents escort students to the After-School Room and check them in for safety.

Kinder Corner: 2:00 pm - 3:20 pm

Kindergarten students are welcomed to the program beginning at 2:00 pm, while waiting for a sibling’s dismissal or simply enjoying additional unscripted free time with friends. Kinder students receive a snack, participate in enrichment classes or free time and have daily story/rest time. Parents can make arrangements through Mrs. Helmgren to have students exiting the program at 3:20 be walked up to Lincoln Avenue for pick-up. Students remaining in ASP past 3:20 must enroll in one of the ASP plans. Siblings and/or parents may also come to retrieve kindergarten students from the program by properly signing them out with a counselor.

Kindergarten-5th Grade: 3:20 pm - 6:00 pm

Students will be greeted and checked into ASP by qualified counselors, then led through age appropriate activities with intermittent supervised play and/or attend ASP classes until picked up by a parent no later than 6pm. Students participating in ASP Enrichment classes must be  signed in and out of ASP for safety reasons, but will not be charged for time spent in classes. All students remaining on campus after 3:45 will automatically be signed into ASP and be charged accordingly.

Middle School:

Middle School students must sign into ASP in Mrs. Peter’s office by 3:45 p.m. Students then may get a snack from the Jayhawk Cafe and/or gather materials for supervised study hall. Students must check into the Read Library by 4:00 pm. Students will remain in the library until 4:45 pm when they will break for a snack in Room 101. All Middle School students in attendance will be expected to be working quietly in study hall and must come prepared. No middle school students may remain on campus unattended after 3:45 pm, students who have not been picked up by 3:45 will automatically be signed into ASP and will be charged accordingly.

Snack:

ASP and Epicurean are working together to provide a nutritious snack for students daily at 4:30 pm, which is included in the outlined fees. All students are welcomed and encouraged to bring additional snacks!

Sign-Out:

IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR 2010-2011!!! In an effort to improve safety for our ASP students, a counselor will now be stationed right inside the gatehouse doors on Lincoln Avenue to receive parents, sign-out and call students to meet their parents at the gatehouse on Lincoln Avenue. We ask that no parents call the program directly in advance to have their students sent to Lincoln Avenue, please plan accordingly. ASP closes promptly at 6:00 pm, students remaining on campus after 6:00 pm, will be charged $5 for the first minute and $1 per minute thereafter.

ASP Band

Beginning Band: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:30-4:15

Intermediate Band: Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:15-5:00

Band is a wonderful opportunity for students to bond with classmates, meet new friends, develop personal discipline, build self esteem, and begin the practice of an art form that will deliver joy and satisfaction from their school days to beyond.

Beginning Band is for students with little to no experience, while intermediate students will have completed at least one full year in band.

The band performs at Lower School Assemblies and takes a field trip to a local school or retirement community in May. The school has a limited number of instruments to loan to families. There are also several local companies to rent instruments from at a reasonable cost. Students do not have to choose an instrument prior to bands’ start, where they’ll be given the opportunity to explore the instruments before making a decision. Requests for instrument loans should be directed to mfrazier@headroyce.org.

Cost: $200 per trimester

Classes begin September 21st

ASP Private Music Lessons

Lessons are available to students in 2nd grade and above as a full year commitment. Teachers will provide thirty-minute individual lessons once a week for $38.00 per lesson, billed by trimester. Please consider your student’s schedule carefully before committing to lessons. Absences for a scheduled school related conflict (for example, sports) will not be charged, but all other absences will be charged for teacher’s time. Students needing to cancel lessons indefinitely will be required to pay for lessons unless a replacement can be scheduled.

After School Music Lessons will take place from 3:30-5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday, and are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.  Childcare prior to lessons is free for Lower School and Middle School students enrolled in an ASP plan. For students not enrolled in an ASP plan a $2 per lesson fee will be added and care after the lessons will be billed at the regular rates.  All Lower and Middle school students remaining on campus prior to lessons must sign into the After School Program before their lessons and must be signed out properly. Lower school students signing into ASP will be sent to lesson by ASP staff to ensure a timely arrival.

PLEASE NOTE, If you are interested in registering for lessons, but the teacher’s below availability does not match yours, please send a request as there are often alternate possibilities.
